Akamai expands its cloud computing footprint with new locations and services

AcquiringLinodeallowedAkamaitofast-trackitsbroadercloudcomputingambitions.Today,thecompanyistakinganotherstepinthisdirection.It’sannouncingtheexpansionofitscloudcomputingservicestofivenewlocations:Paris,Washington,D.C.andChicago,whicharegoinglivenow,andSeattleandChennai,whichwillopenlaterthisquarter.

Akamaiisalsolaunchingasetofnewpremiuminstancesforcommercialworkloads,whichwillgoliveinthesenewlylaunchedsites.UsersofAkamai’sobjectstorageservicecannowalsostoretwiceasmuchdata:uptoonepetabyteandonebillionobjectsperbucket.There’salsoanewgloballoadbalancer,whichbridgesthefunctionalityofLinode’sloadbalancerforlocaltrafficloadbalancingandAkamai’sglobaltrafficmanagerandapplicationloadbalancer.

“Distributedworkloadsrequiredistributedinfrastructure,”saidAdamKaron,chiefoperatingofficerandgeneralmanageroftheCloudTechnologyGroupatAkamai.“Legacy,centralizedcloudarchitecturewasnotdesignedforthedemandsofdevelopersandcompanieschallengedwithdeliveringbetteruserexperiencesthatincreasinglyrequireputtingapplicationsanddataclosertothecustomer.”

WhenItalkedtoAkamaiCEOTomLeightonattheCollisionconferenceinTorontolastmonth,henotedthatthecompanyisinvestingheavilytoupgradeLinodeto“beusablebymajorenterprisesformission-criticalapplications.”Hespecificallymentionedupgradestoobjectstorage,whichthecompanyreleasedtoday.Heexpectsthiswillallowthecompanytobringalotofitsmediacustomerstoitscloudcomputingservice.

HealsobelievesAkamaihasanadvantageherebecauseitsvastexistinginfrastructureallowsittoofferbandwidthratesthatarelowerthanthoseofferedbyothermajorcloudcomputingservices.

“Ultimately, we’regoingtomakeLinode evenmoredeveloper-friendly andeasytouseaswedeploythesoftware intheexistingAkamai platformsothatwecanofferyoucontainersinhundredsofplaces,forexample,”hesaid.

LeightonnotedthatAkamaiwillbringonanotherdozenorsolocationsforitscloudcomputingservicesinQ3.
