Thecarmakersaidinaletterthatthevendor,usedbyVolkswagen,itssubsidiaryAudiandauthorizeddealersintheU.S.andCanada,leftthecustomerdataspanning2014to2019unprotectedoveratwo-yearwindowbetweenAugust2019andMay2021.
Thedata,whichVolkswagensaidwasgatheredforsalesandmarketing,containedpersonalinformationaboutcustomersandprospectivebuyers,includingtheirname,postalandemailaddresses,andphonenumber.
Butmorethan90,000customersacrosstheU.S.andCanadaalsohadmoresensitivedataexposed,includinginformationrelatingtoloaneligibility.Thelettersaidmostofthesensitivedatawasdriver’slicensenumbers,butthata“small”numberofrecordsalsoincludedacustomer’sdateofbirthandSocialSecuritynumbers.

Volkswagen’sletter,however,didnotsayifthecompanyhadevidencethatthedataexposedbythevendorwasmisused.
